What is Sex Trafficking?
Sex trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery, widespread throughout the World today. Anyone under the age of 18 involved in commercial sex is considered a trafficking victim by law because they are children and cannot consent to exploitation.
Here are some facts about sex trafficking:
Sex trafficking is a global crime, affecting millions of women and children, ranking as the #2 international crime, between the sale of arms and drugs.
Traffickers use physical violence, threats of violence, emotional manipulation, and/or drugs to control and keep victims psychologically committed to their captures.
Victims cannot leave on their own; the control that traffickers, pimps, brothel owners, and others involved, create threatening and controlling environments, making overwhelming for the victims to escape.
The average age of girls that are sexually trafficked globally, is 15 years old.
In Cambodia, it is estimated that there are over 20,000 girls being trafficked for commercial sex.
In 2009, the Indian government estimated that there are almost 1.2 million girls trafficked for sex in India.
Today, according to the FBI, 300,000 American children are being sexually trafficked within the United States each year.
According to law enforcement, 1 out of every 3 runaways in the United States will be contacted by a trafficker within 48 hours.
The United States is the number one destination for Americans seeking sex with a child.
The average age of entry into pornography and prostitution within the U.S. is 12-14 years old.
These are just a few facts, which may seem overwhelming, but there is hope. Transitions Global believes that there needs to be a holistic approach to combatting human trafficking, but there needs to be a specific focus on the 'human' part of trafficking. This means that we need to consider the services victims need to begin the process of healing.
